Songs of the Year: 1977

Disco fever? Try Fleetwood Mac fever!

Published

on

Peak disco was on the doorstep, but 1977 was Fleetwood Mac’s year as Rumours dominated the charts. Punk and new wave were also waiting in the wings, as the big bloated dinosaur that was rock music was getting a little long in the tooth. But don’t tell that to the public, Hotel California, Boston, ELO, Bob Seger and the Steve Miller Band also had top albums, along with Stevie Wonder’s 1976 masterpiece, Songs in the Key of Life.

On the singles charts, yeah, we got disco: Andy Gib, Rita Coolidge, ABBA, Leo Sayer. Plus the marginally funky stylings of KC and the Sunshine Band, The Emotions, Rod Stewart’s crooner phase, and even some Hall and Oates. Fleetwood, Foreigner, Steve Miller, Bread, Eagles, Aerosmith and Queen also enjoyed chart success. It was a wild and crazy time to be listening to the radio.

The year is 1977 and we’re picking our favorite songs of the year.

It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.

We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.

Standings So Far

Queen’s Somebody to Love was the easy winner for 1976 and now Joe’s opened up a 1.5 point lead on Jason as he continues to dominate the 70s with wins in 71, 73, 74, 75 and 76. Can the streak keep going? He’s going to have to take down Jason’s extremely popular (and obvious) pick. Kramzer? Well, let’s just say he’s going to do better in the 80s, folks!

Joe: 10
Jason: 8.5
Kramzer: 5.5
