Songs of the Year: 2019

Tastes… like… music, doo-doo-do-do-do-do

2018 was the nadir, 2019 a slight rebound thanks to a new generation of less awful pop and R&B stars like Harry Styles, Lizzo, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish and good ol’ reliable Weeknd.

Now, the Hot 100 end of year chart still was terrible because of where new releases fell. Lil Nas X’s old town road was the run away winner — and one of the most popular songs ever. Post Malone had two songs, Halsey, Billie Eilish (bad guy), Marshmello ft. Bastille, Ariana Grande and Khalid also had big tunes.

THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.

We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.

Standings So Far …

A tie! We haven’t had one of these in a long time. Father John Misty and Michael Rault ended up as co-winners, beating out perennial loser The 1975. Jason will be looking for another unknown surprise with his 2019 pick while Kramzer and Joe will rely on known entities and critical darlings for their pick.

It’s win or go home time!

Joe: 25.5
Jason: 24
Kramzer: 18.5
