A little bit of something for everyone on a varied release day

Published

Lots of quantity as we end the month of April with a wide array of releases from artists across the genre spectrum.

The delayed Let’s Eat Grandma record Two Ribbons is ACTUALLY out today. The pop/rockers are getting good (to great) reviews from their third release, though not quite as strong as 2018’s I’m All Ears.

It’s been an eternity… or six years for the once indie-darlings Bloc Party. But they’re back with Alpha Games. Unfortunately, like pretty much everything since Silent Alarm, it’s drawing extremely middling reactions from the critics.

Palomino is the new one from Miranda Lambert. One of the few country artists that balance critical and commercial appeal in equal measure, her latest is getting typically strong reviews. Miranda don’t miss: every single one of her albums has scored 80 or above on Metacritic. So far, Palomino is continuing that streak.

Norwegian electronic superstars Röyksopp are back with their first album in eight years. Profound Mysteries features some strong guest appearances from Alison Goldfrapp, Susanne Sundfør and others.

If you’re into R&B, Kehlani’s latest, her third-album overall, Blue Water Road is out today.

Then there’s the seventh studio album from Chaz Bear, AKA Toro Y Moi. The album is titled Mahal and it is drawing mixed reaction so far.

Also getting some good buzz are a slew of metal albums. Rammstein returns with Zeit, Kirk Hammett’s debut solo release, the instrumental EP Portals, drops–and even Pitchfork digs it! And if you like black metal, there’s The Agony & Ecstasy of Watain by Watain.

The Black Keys continue to pump out new music. Their album Dropout Boogie will be out May 13th.

Another single release from Arcade Fire’s upcoming comeback. It doesn’t sound like anything off of Everything Now.

beabadoobee has a new single.

Roxanne

The “cult” ones you missed.

  • Robin Trower – No More Worlds to Conquer (Quality stuff from the old master, now nearing 80, but his tone and expression is still unrivaled.)
  • Ted Nugent – Detroit Muscle (Only 33 minutes long and that is half a hour too much. I can ignore his “messages” and lyrics as long as he plays his guitar – which he forgot to do on this one.)
