Setlist Draft

Setlist Draft: Led Zeppelin

Published

on

Welcome to our new series, Setlist Draft!

What does that mean? How does it work? Who are you and why am I here?

Great questions.

Here’s the long and short of it: Every month we will pick a legendary artist and try and create our “ideal” setlist through turn-by-turn drafting of that artists’ songs. But here’s the trick, much like the NFL (or NBA, NHL, MLB, etc.) draft, each song exists as a single entity. If someone else picks, it’s unable to be chosen by another drafter. To determine the number of songs, including the encore (or encores), we will choose real-life famous concerts from that artist. As a further wrinkle, the drafters have to place the songs in the setlist when they draft them. So once it’s there, it’s official and cannot be moved around.

Since these are fantasy concerts merely based on real ones, all songs by a band are eligible, even if they hadn’t been written or released by the time of the concert we pick.

For our first setlist draft we chose the greatest rock band of all time: Led Zeppelin and one of their most famous concerts, Knebworth 1979.

Zeppelin played 18 songs, an encore, then a second encore with two additional songs.

As the winner of Song of the Year, Joe got first pick in this year’s draft, followed by Jason, and then Kramzer with the 3rd pick of the 1st round and the 1st pick of the 2nd round, snake draft style. We continued for 21 rounds until our setlist was complete.

Now we need you, the adoring fans and watchers of Tastes Like Music to determine the best setlist amongst the three contestants. BE WARNED. This isn’t just for fun, the winners and losers will be justly rewarded (or severely punished) during the next setlist draft.

Which fictional Knebworth 1979 concert are you going with?

I had to vote Kramzer because his set has the best flow. Black Mountain Side -> Friends -> Out On The Tiles feels awkward but gets better the more I picture it, especially after those first four and especially if the band transitioned from Black Mountain Side into Friends directly.

Would love to see you guys do Rush next given that you’re such big fans and they have so much diverse material to pick from so the sets could get wild. Keep up the great work!

I thought The Rain song was not a good closer
