Songs of the Year
Songs of the Year: 1992
“I think we’ll go with a little Bohemian Rhapsody, gentlemen.” “Good call.” *Rhapsodizing intensifies*

Grunge and alternative are still the genres du jour in the US, but you wouldn’t really know it from the charts. Boyz II Men’s all-conquering End of the Road (from the Boomerang soundtrack of all places) finished as the #1 single of 1992. Following up the Boyz were Sir Mix-a-Lot with Baby Got Back, Kriss Kross with Jump, Save the Best for Last from Vanessa Williams and Baby-Baby-Baby from TLC. Tears in Heaven from Eric Clapton and En Vogue’s My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It) also come before the first song from a band in the grunge/alternative world. That band was Red Hot Chili Peppers and their monster hit Under the Bridge finished in the number eight position. Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit finished 32nd.
Returning to the charts, thanks to (the excellent) Wayne’s World, was Bohemian Rhapsody, which ended up at No. 39 on the year end charts.
Schwing!
THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.
We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.
Standings So Far …
Jason took home another win in 1991 with Matthew Sweet’s Girlfriend, which beat out the Chris Cornell double feature of All Night Thing (Kramzer) and Outshined (Joe). After being dominated throughout the 70s and 80s, Jason is hot on the heels of the people’s champion with a nigh unbeatable 1992 pick. Joe continues his recent them of ultra-heavy almost metal hard rock. Kramzer gonna Kramzer. But he might take 100% of the boomer vote with this one.
Joe: 16
Jason: 14.5
Kramzer: 9.5
