Songs of the Year
Songs of the Year: 2000
Man, it’s a hot one…
It’s the new millenium, Y2K was a bust, everything is totally peachy.
Well, except on the charts. There it’s a bloodbath. The year 2000 has a very strong claim to be the worst year ever on the Billboards… well until 2021.
For the first time since the 50s, a country song was the number one overall Billboard Year-end #1. Faith Hill’s Breathe edged out Smooth and Maria Maria from Santana’s billion selling comeback Supernatural. I Wanna Know from Joe and Everything You Want from Vertical Horizon rounded out the top five. Also making appearances were Savage Garden, Destiny’s Child (more than once), Matchbox Twenty, Creed, Sisqo, 3 Doors Down, Pink, Madonna, ‘N Sync, Backstreet Boys, Nelly and Blink 182 amongst many more.
What wasn’t on the charts was actual rock music, at least for the most part. Stone Temple Pilots and Red Hot Chili Peppers made some noise, but mostly it was just crap. Plenty to choose from for our worst songs of the year, that’s for sure.
THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.
We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.
Standings So Far …
It’s a three-peat for Joe, as Sour Girl stages a massive comeback to overtake The Book of Love by a mere three votes. Kramzer had some votes for My Morning Jacket, but not enough to actually list them. 2000 find Kramzer going with a truly obvious band, but maybe not an obvious choice. Joe’s pick is a first for the channel and Jason goes as deep into alt-country as you can get without coming out the other side dressed in tattered denim with a haystalk in his mouth.
Joe: 20
Jason: 15.5
Kramzer: 12.5
