Songs of the Year
Songs of the Year: 2001
2001: A Tastes Like Music odyssey
2001 was a strange year on the charts. Suddenly, we have rock and country music making big strides up the Billboards.
In fact, the number 1 song of the entire year was a rock song (ed. debateable) Lifehouse’s Hanging by a Moment. The top ten also featured Train’s Drops of Jupiter, If You’re Gone by Matchbox Twenty and Again by Lenny Kravitz. Certainly nothing dangerous, but they did prominently feature guitars at least. Alicia Keys’ Fallin, Janet’s All For You and Dido’s Thank You also were strong performers.
Incubus, Staind, Aerosmith, Dave Matthews Band, 3 Doors Down, Eve 6, Creed, U2 and Fuel also made the charts inbetween the usual country, pop and R&B numbers. Some names you’ll see again include Usher, Alicia Keys, Blake Shelton, and Nelly Furtado.
THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.
We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.
Standings So Far …
Joe’s quest for four in a row is spoiled by Kramzer’s pick of Radiohead’s Idioteque, which was an easy winner over Outkast and Billy Bragg / Wilco. 2001 should prove to be an interesting matchup between an indie darling, an instrumental track and a pair of robots with a heart.
Joe: 20
Jason: 15.5
Kramzer: 13.5
