Songs of the Year: 2002

Palms sweaty, knees weak, arms heavy… ranking songs of 2002 on the internet, hope you’re ready.

It’s 2002, America is understandably rattled from 9/11. Suddenly lots more country and rock songs start charting to the point that we had a rock song at number one. It wasn’t a good one, but it ostensibly falls into the rock category. It being Nickelback’s How You Remind Me. Following behind that was Foolish from Ashanti, Hot in Herre by Nelly, Dilemma by Nelly featuring Kelly Rowland and ANOTHER “rock” song in Wherever You Will Go by The Calling.

Even if you expand it to the top 10, you see A Thousand Miles by Vanessa Carlton (pop, but still), In The End by LInkin Park and Blurry by Puddle of Mudd. The Middle by Jimmy Eat World landed at No. 14, an incredible showing for an emo band. It seemed like everyone was in a melancholy mode for the most part.

THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.

We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.

Standings So Far …

Jason (with an assist from Zach Braff) won with The Shins’ New Slang to creep closer to Joe. This week we have a matchup between Kramzer’s usual out of left field selection, an indie favorite and an acidic hard rocker.

Joe: 20
Jason: 16.5
Kramzer: 13.5
