Songs of the Year: 2003

2003: the year of the club banger.

It’s 2003 and people just want to get “In da Club”, dammit.

The charts were filled with dance songs, club bangers, anything to get the girls to shake their tailfeathers.

At the top was 50 Cent’s inescapable In da Club followed by R. Kelly’s inescapable Ignition. Sean Paul made his presence known with his #1 smash Get Busy, which finished third on the year-end charts. The Beyonce and Jay-Z alliance was put into motion with Crazy in Love (No. 4) and Chingy and Aaliyah (RIP) also were in the top 10 along with “rock” bands like 3 Doors Down (When I’m Gone) and Matchbox Twenty (Unwell). You also had a pair of duets with Picture from Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow and Bring Me to Life from Evanescence and Paul McCoy. Just outside the top 10 were more club hits: Get Low, Shake Ya Tailfeather, 21 Questions, Magic Stick, P.I.M.P. and Bump, Bump, Bump.

The year’s winner was undeniably 50 Cent. His Get Rich or Die Tryin’ album was everywhere, selling 872,000 copies in its first week and spinning off two number one singles. Now regarded as one of the classics of the genre, it was ranked on Rolling Stone’s list of Top 500 albums of all time.

THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.

We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.

Standings So Far …

Jason wins again with the indie heart-tugger Do You Realize?? From the Flaming Lips, which comfortably beat out Joe’s QOTSA selection, Go With the Flow and Kramzer’s Silent Sigh pick from Badly Drawn Boy. This year will be one of the biggest tests of the voting public, will they spring for something outside of their comfort zone, or go with an established safe pick (because there isn’t really a choice, there’s no third option.)

Joe: 20
Jason: 17.5
Kramzer: 13.5
