Songs of the Year: 2013

It’s Bey’s world and we’re just living in it.

2013 was the year of Beyoncé (a trend which would continue). The singer shocked the music world with her stealth release of her self-titled album in late December. It’s 2022 and it’s still Beyoncé’s world and we’re just living in it.

The Mars Volta, My Chemical Romance and A Tribe Called Quest all broke up.

R&B dominated.

Eminem had an album sell 779,000 copies in its first week and not a single person cares about it today.

Justin Timberlake’s Album The 20/20 Experience sold almost 1,000,000 copies in its first week and literally no one even remembers what was on it.

RIP Lou Reed.

THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.

We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.

Standings So Far …

First Aid Kit’s tribute to Emmylou Harris was an easy victor for 2012 despite Joe picking a song from the consensus best album of 2012 and a highly influential and well-known artist. All 12 people who had heard of Fitzpleasure voted for it.

This year, an old favorite takes on a young up and coming synthpop band and Kramzer picks someone Joe has never heard of.

Joe: 23
Jason: 21.5
Kramzer: 17.5
