Songs of the Year: 2014

2014, the year of 1989.

It’s 2014, will Joe declare this the new worst year ever or will he turn over a new leaf?

2014 was all Taylor Swift. Although she only had number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the year, her songs would rule the charts for years to come.

1989 turned her into a global pop icon.

A development that we’re still suffering through to this day.

The actual biggest track of 2014 was Happy by Pharrell. A song from the Despicable 2 soundtrack. That seems like a highly unlikely combination.

THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.

We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.

Standings So Far …

Another blow for democracy: Jason rides indie synth pop band CHVRCHES to a narrow win over Queens of the Stone Age. There’s always next year. Which is now. This could be the most interesting matchup in decades. Super indie popstar vs. super indie synthpopstars vs. super indie rockstars. If you love indie music, you’re going to flip out.

A win for Jason would vault him back into first place for the first time since the 70s.

Joe: 23
Jason: 22.5
Kramzer: 17.5
