Songs of the Year: 2012

2012 was some year that I used to know.

Welcome to 2012 and an interesting year on the charts thanks to the year’s big winner. Gotye featuring Kimbra’s Somebody That I Used to Know totally dominated the charts with a run of eight consecutive weeks, finishing in the top spot for the year. An odd and arty song for the top of the charts, but we’ll take it!

Following behind the congenial queen of girl next door pop, Carly Rae Jepsen, who burst onto the scene with the inescapable Call Me Maybe. Fun’s We Are Young, Maroon 5’s Payphone and Ellie Goulding’s Lights rounded out the top 5.

Flo Rida, Kelly Clarkson, Niki Minaj, One Direction, Adele, Train and Bruno Mars also had good years.

THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.

We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.

Standings So Far …

Kramzer and Joe’s pick of Midnight City by M83 was the comfortable winner of 2011. The song charted in 2012, so expect to see it featured prominently on many people’s lists.

For 2012, you have your usual: a popular artist skewing the bounds between pop and R&B, an indie/alt favorite and someone a little lots of pedal steel. You already know who picked who.

Joe: 23
Jason: 20.5
Kramzer: 17.5
