Songs of the Year
Songs of the Year: 1999
It’s here and I like it!
We gonna party like it’s nineteen–hold up it is!
Everyone was on the edge of their seats in 1999, waiting for Y2K, the Willenium and possibly for a computer bug to destroy civilization.
On the charts it was the Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Christina, Aguilera, 98 degrees, N’Sync, Blink 182–a year of teeny boppers and pop punkers. Plus a couple of massive comebacks from the old guard (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and old old guard (Cher, Sting and Santana).
Modern rock flag bearers were Pearl Jam (their cover of Last Kiss), Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox 20 and Smash Mouth. Not great, Bob!
The top songs of the year were Cher’s Believe — which gave us auto-tune, thanks a lot, Cher — No Scrubs from TLC, Monica’s Angel of Mine, Heartbreak Hotel from Whitney, Faith and Kelly Price, and …Baby One More Time from Britney Spears.
THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.
We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.
Standings So Far …
It’s back-to-back wins for Joe as The New Radicals overcomes a strong challenge from Led Zeppelin Beck with Nobody’s Fault But My Own. Kramzer’s pick of the Smashing Pumpkins fell short in their quest to become a 3x winner. This year features one big song from a big band, a niche song from a niche band and an unknown song from a future big band.
Joe: 19
Jason: 15.5
Kramzer: 12.5
