Songs of the Year: 2005

It’s the return of the 90s! Mariah Carey, Weezer, Will Smith, Gwen Stefani and Green Day are back on top.

Dance rock, emo, Kanye West all had great years in 2005. But strangely it was all about former 90s stars getting their groove back.

Mariah Carey was overall Hot 100 No. 1 with her comeback We Belong Together. Green Day had multiple entries on the Hot 100, Gwen Stefani (now solo) was No. 2 with Hollaback Girl, Weezer’s Beverly Hills broke them into the pop charts and even Will Smith was back with the title track to his smash “Hitch”. A true double threat, indeed.

Elsewhere, 50 Cent, Ciara, Kelly Clarkson, Mario, Black Eyed Peas and Rihanna’s debut were big hits. The Killers eternal Mr. Brightside hit number 16 on the year end charts, a strong showing for a legitimately good rock song from a real band. Fall Out Boy added a little emo flavor to the charts as well.

THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.

We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.

Standings So Far …

Joe was back on top with The Killers’ Somebody Told Me, which edged out the double Twilight selections from Kramzer and Jason. This year Joe picks another big name artist, Jason goes Canadien and Kramzer goes full furry.

Joe: 21
Jason: 18.5
Kramzer: 13.5
