Songs of the Year
Songs of the Year: 2006
We’re bringing sexy back.
Dance rock is receding from the charts, but wimpy singer songwriters and soft rock bands are definitely not having a “bad day”.
Timbaland had himself a hell of a 2006 with massive success producing Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado’s albums FutureSex/LoveSounds and Loose respectively.
Daniel Powter’s Bad Day was the overall No. 1, followed by Sean Paul’s Temperature, Promiscuous from Nelly Furtado and Timbaland, You’re Beautiful from James Blunt (who apparently isn’t the same person as Daniel Powter), Hips Don’t Lie (Shakira), Unwritten (Natasha Bedingfield), Crazy (Gnarls Barkley), Ridin (Chamillionaire), SexyBack (Justin and Timbaland) and Beyonce’s Check On It.
The highest charting rock band was The Fray with their ubiquitously crappy Over My Head (Cable Car). Other bands making the chart included Panic! At the Disco, The All-American Rejects, Hinter, Fall Out Boy, Nickelback, Evanescence, Blue October, Lifehouse, and Gorillaz.
Yikes.
THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.
We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.
Standings So Far …
Joe squeaks out another incredibly tight victory with Nine Inch Nails’ The Hand that Feeds winning by a mere two votes over In State by Kathleen Edwards. Even Kramzer’s Animal Collective pick had a strong showing. This week, prepare for another three-way showdown. There’s no favorite here, though Kramzer might have a leg up… I mean, the losing streak has to end at some point, right?
Joe: 22
Jason: 18.5
Kramzer: 13.5
