Songs of the Year
Songs of the Year: 1986
Woah-ohhh we’re half way there, woahh-ohhh Songs of the Ye-ar
It’s 1986, aka the year of the Kramzer.
Another year with oodles of pop gems. It’s the 80’s. We do this every year. Bon Jovi brought forth Slippery When Wet, cementing the late 80s as the era of pop metal. Also charting highly, Poison, Peter Gabriel, Journey, Peter Cetera, Cindy Lauper, Madonna, Berlin, The Bangles, Janet Jackson, Stevie Winwood, Huey Lewis and the News. Metallica, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest all released classic metal albums and New Order, The Smithereens and The Smiths brought the college radio stuff.
It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.
We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.
Standings So Far …
It was a blowout of blowouts as Everybody Wants to Rule the World from Tears for Fears (Joe’s Pick) trounced Jason’s Todd selection and Kramzer’s alternative Husker Du pick. But this might be Kramzer’s year. He’s going with an 80s pop rock classic that went all the way to #2 (in 1987) while Joe’s didn’t chart at all in the 80’s (it managed to hit #98 in 1995). Jason’s pick has absolutely no chance of winning, but he will take all the sympathy votes he can muster.
Joe: 15
Jason: 11.5
Kramzer: 7.5
