Songs of the Year
Songs of the Year: 1987
Hysteria. Bad. Whitney. Appetite. Joshua Tree. Kick. Faith. Document. Sign O The Times. It’s a good year for the blockbuster release.
The year of the blockbuster: Bad, The Joshua Tree, Appetite for Destruction, Sign O The Times, Faith, Tango in the Night, Whitesnake ’87, Hysteria, Whitney. That’s a lot of albums sold. It was such a big year that many of those albums would continue producing charting singles well into 1988.
If you weren’t into blockbusters, well The Cure, Dinosaur Jr., The Smiths, REM and The Replacements all put out seminal releases. In short, no matter what you’re into, it was a good year… unless it was metal. Metal took the year off (except for you, Stryper).
Billboard Hot 100 song of the year? Walk Like an Egyptian from the Bangles took the top spot, followed by Heart’s Alone, Shake You Down by Gregory Abbott, I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me) by Whitney Houston (it is Whitney week after all) and Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now from the band formerly known as Jefferson Starship.
It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.
We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.
Standings So Far …
Just like the Miracle Mets in 1986, Kramzer came out of nowhere to snatch a victory with Crowded House’s Don’t Dream It’s Over. The Aussie vote handily carried it to victory as it took down the twin powerhouses of New Order and Elvis Costello. That’s Kramzer’s first solo win since 1978. Can he go back-to-back for the first time ever? His pick, which is a definite Jason pick will have a tough time against Jason’s Kramzer pick. Joe? Let’s just say he went with his heart on this one.
Joe: 15
Jason: 11.5
Kramzer: 8.5
