Songs of the Year
Songs of the Year: 1988
1988, it’s really just 1987 part 2.
The superstars of 1987 are still dominating here in 1988. George Michael’s Faith is the big seller of the year with three non-consecutive appearances at the top of the charts. Also making a big splash was the Dirty Dancing soundtrack. Released all the way back in August of 1987, it topped the charts for 11 non-consecutive weeks in 1988. Def Leppard and Guns N’ Roses also have with multiple weeks at #1 as well as new albums from Van Halen, Bon Jovi and U2.
On the Billboard Hot 100, Faith finished the year at the top, followed by Need You Tonight from INXS and the ol’ Beatle himself, George Harrison at No. 3 with Got My Mind Set On You. Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley (*not a Rick Roll), Sweet Child o’ Mine, So Emotional, Heaven Is a Place on Earth, Could’ve Been, Hands to Heaven and Roll With It finished out the top 10.
THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.
We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.
Standings So Far …
Joe’s appeal to Taylor Dayne on Twitter was in vain as Jason’s pick of Alex Chilton took home the victory. Kramzer, stealing a page from Jason’s Dinosaur Jr. loving book, once again finished last. This year’s battle looks like a fierce one as a cult favorite, fiery rookie hard rock band and bad boy Brit go head-to-head for the crown of 1988.
Joe: 15
Jason: 12.5
Kramzer: 8.5
