Songs of the Year: 1967

1967… it’s the summer of love.

The year is 1967 (the summer of love) and we’re picking our favorite songs of the year.

It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.

We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.

It’s the summer of love, the time of psychedelia and the year of the Beatles, who put out Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour IN THE SAME YEAR. Not that they were the only band doing stuff, of course. The Rolling Stones released a bevy of masterful singles, the Who put out their artpop masterpiece The Who Sell Out and Jimi Hendrix burst on to the scene with Are You Experienced? And Axis Bold as Love, not a bad one-two punch. The Doors broke on through as well. Plus the Turtles, the Kinks, Smokey Robinson, Harry Nilsson, Dusty Springfield, Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, Aretha Franklin and so many more. If you’re not loving this music scene, you might want to check your pulse.

This will probably the hardest week yet to choose a winner, as all three are deserving. The boys didn’t have to dig too deep to find these tracks, as they’re all generally regarded as some of the finest tunes ever made.

Check back every week for a NEW episode and don’t forget to subscribe to the channel and share this post or this video on all your favorite social networks because lord knows we’ve earned it.

You can also check out our companion album Albums of the Year 1967.
