Songs of the Year
Songs of the Year: 1973
Another year absolutely chalk full of everlasting epic releases. Hell, I think Dark Side of the Moon is still charting!
The seventies are just getting more seventiesier! The year is 1973 and we’re picking our favorite songs of the year.
It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.
We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.
1973 brought about some massive albums from classic artists. You had Quadrophenia from The Who, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road from Elton John and Dark Side of the Moon from Pink Floyd. Oh and Houses of the Holy, Band on the Run, Innvervisions, Aladdin Sane, Billion Dollar Babies, Goats Head Soup, Red Rose Speedway, Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only the Piano Player, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd (Pronounced ‘LÄ•h-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd), Let’s Get it On and on and on and on.
In any case, we cut our winners down to the usual five personal favorites and five billboard charting singles. Here’s what we came up with.
Standings So Far
The David Bowie penned All the Young Dudes, Jason’s pick, won the year in a tight race between I Believe (When I Fall in Love it Will Be Forever) by Stevie Wonder and Tupelo Honey by Van Morrison. Although the vote was close, in general, the commenters didn’t seem too thrilled about any of the picks. But this is not about them. It’s about us!
Jason: 8.5
Joe: 6
Kramzer: 3.5
