Songs of the Year: 1995

The year Britpop ruled the world?

Published

on

It’s another loaded year for rock and roll. Britain was overflowing with great rock bands: Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Supergrass and Pulp all released seminal albums–some might say some of the best ever–and America was right behind with releases from Alice in Chains, Smashing Pumpkins, Alanis Morrissette, Pavement, Garbage and Foo Fighters. Plus historic hip-hop albums like Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Brown Sugar, Liquid Swords, Maxinquaye and the Infamous.

On the charts, Coolio and TLC ruled the roost. Gangsta’s Paradise was overall top song, while TLC’s Waterfalls and Creep were number two and three. Throw in some of the usual suspects: Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi, Madonna and Michael Jackson and you had another year ruled by pop. Blues Traveler’s Run-Around and Collective Soul’s December were two rock tracks that broke into the pop club with extended runs on the Billboard Hot 100.

Finally, a swan song from Van Halen with Can’t Stop Lovin’ You from Balance. It was their last song to reach the top 40 in the US and finished at No. 100 on the year end chart.

THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.

We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.

Standings So Far …

Kramzer won the battle of Buckley, Jeff. Hallelujah edged out Grace and Lover, You Should’ve Come Over to give Kramzer his 10 and a halfth victory of the season and suddenly, he doesn’t seem that far behind. Will we have a similar situation with The Bends in 1995? Watch and see.

Joe: 17
Jason: 15.5
Kramzer: 10.5
