Songs of the Year
Songs of the Year: 1996
1996 is best known for being the year a man sued Tori Amos for crashing his car because he got distracted by a billboard of Tori Amos breastfeeding a piglet.
Rock music’s era is drawing to a close. But what a way to go out. 1996 saw choice cuts from massive 95 albums What’s the Story Morning Glory and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness make the Billboard 100. In post-grunge news, Goo Goo Dolls, Gin Blossoms, Dishwalla Collective Soul, Blues Traveler, Sheryl Crow and Hootie & The Blowfish make the year end Billboard 100 charts. Holding it down for the old school, Metallica and Pearl Jam also show up.
However, dominating as always is pop and r&B. Macarena makes the list… twice. Celine Dion, Mariah Carey with Always Be My Baby, Fantasy and One Sweet Day. Brandy, Keith Sweat, Toni Braxton, LL Cool J, Jewel, La Bouche, Monica, Whitney Houston and Ginuwine are also strong performers for 1996.
THE RULES: It’s a simple concept. We pick five of our favorite songs that made the Billboard Top 100 (established in 1958) during any time that year. We also select five “wildcards” that can be any songs released as a single or on an album or EP that year. Finally, we also pick our “worst” song of the year, just for fun.
We started in 1958 and we’re going until we run out of years.
Standings So Far …
Kramzer’s on a hot streak! Fake Plastic Trees blew away the competition in 95 and now he’s banking on one of the great songs (and videos) of ’96 to pull him within three points of Jason for second place. Although Joe is still in the lead, the 90s have not been kind so far and 1996 probably isn’t his year to turn things around. Jason goes dad rock early.
Joe: 17
Jason: 15.5
Kramzer: 11.5
